What happened this week

This week we were actually faced with the question of whether it was worth reporting at all. We can’t remember a year in the past where business activity worldwide was as far down as this year. This applies not only to production, but also to office and administrative activities. Apart from very isolated shipments, there was hardly any activity and certainly no serious interest in hides and skins. This is unusual, because in the past it was always the case that someone from the Middle or Far East was always looking for a bargain. This year, everyone seems to have adopted a wait-and-see attitude and no one was seriously ambitious in replenishing their raw material stocks. This certainly has to do with the situation in China, where all eyes are on the completely disorderly spread of the covid virus. It seems that after two agonising years of massive restriction, the Chinese government now wants to catch up with the rest of the world in a fast track. A very exciting experiment for sure, but the crucial question will be whether a certain herd immunity can actually be achieved within a few weeks or months and, above all, at what price. In any case, this is currently leading to the fact that with the early Chinese New Year in China, there is no great need for quick decisions. Some sellers who have perhaps been able to do a little more business in China in recent weeks should be reminded that in China a deal is only done when the money is in the account and outstanding shipments can quickly

become a problem in special situations. In Europe, the discussion about collagen production is intensifying. Decreasing slaughter and lower leather production in the coming months also result in a lower supply of lime splits and thus the idea, which some also had in the summer of 2020, that more hides are directly available for the production of collagen manufacturers intensifies again. We think this is relatively unlikely, the magic price that the collagen industry imagines for its raw material makes a continuous availability of many bovine hides in Europe almost inconceivable. The world is nowhere near as still as it was in 2020 at the height of the corona restrictions in Europe. However, as is so often the case, it is not helpful to look at the moment, but it is important to get a clearer picture for the future, i.e. probably for the period from the second quarter onwards. Of course, the markets will always fluctuate, but for the better quality raw material, we believe that the fluctuations will be less pronounced and that sales are largely secured. Whether the total global leather demand will be sufficient to absorb the production of cattle hides worldwide can certainly not be regarded as certain at this point in time. We have no sales to report this week and therefore no price changes either. Somehow it seems to take a few more weeks before a reasonably reliable market picture emerges again.

The kill

As expected, the kill was very low this week. Some slaughterhouses did not work at all and some skipped individual days. Although there was only one official holiday, volumes were very low for a week. As the cold stores for meat are still well stocked, we expect some normalisation at the beginning of next year, but volumes will most likely remain below average.

What do we expect

There is little basis to make any kind of forecast for the coming week. It is hard to imagine that tanners will be busy buying raw material again as early as next week. Most of the deals have already been made for sellers and buyers into January and therefore there is not too much need for action. It only remains for us to wish our readers a healthy, peaceful and successful New Year 2023! It seems that these good wishes have this year much more meaning than usual..
