What
happened this week: this week:
Even
though there are still two weeks left on
the calendar, the year 2021 has actually
entered its final round with the end of
this week. In Europe, at
least, production runs out next week and
most tanneries then close for a week, but
in many cases for two. However long the
stoppage is planned, in principle
both purchases and deliveries are fixed
until at least mid-January and hardly
anyone will be concerned with the
question of rawhide purchases until
then. The
situation is certainly somewhat
different for overseas customers and it
wouldnot be surprising if the usual
suspects did not also try to use the
holiday
period in Europe to find one or two
special offers in the next 14
days.Unfortunately, most of our
employees will still have to work for
the next two
weeks. Slaughtering will continue and
overseas shipments will also have to be
handled. The volume is certainly less
than normal, but unfortunately we cannot
take a longer break. This week was
already strongly influenced by the
interruption. In Europe, smaller deals
for January were made here and there,
and one or two enquiries also arrived
from Asia. From there mostly for items
that are not available at the moment and
in Europe it was actually mostly just
adjustments to running programmes Under
the impression of |
the rising infection
figures, all market participants remain
on the cautious and wait-and-see
side and
one has the impression that everyone is
actually very happy and satisfied
thatthey now have a few days in which
they are not pushed and forced to make
decisions. If it weren't for the great
uncertainties caused by the pandemic,one
could actually say that the market has
found its balance and acceptable
price level at the moment. Apart from
the fact that every seller always wants
to have more money and every buyer would
like to pay less, one has the feeling
that actually everyone has little
interest in big changes at the moment.
This is definitely the case with us and
we would therefore welcome a longer
period
of stability under the given
circumstances. We can hardly find a
sensible reason why major price changes
would have to be explained and certainly
not one
that could have any positive effect on
business as such at the present
time.Neither would significantly cheaper
prices for hides significantly stimulate
demand, nor would significantly higher
prices be seriously justifiable in the
current situation, nor would they really
be feasible in the long term. More
clarity on political and economic
developments is therefore needed before
other
price levels |
could
be justified. The volume of sales this
week
was very moderate and the prices for
the deals completely unchanged from
the
previous week. At the end we did not
have too many hides to sell to be
motivated to consider lower bids nor
we found any buyer who was stimulated
enough to consider any higher prices
to secure raw material supply. This is
usually called: market in balance. The Kill:
The
beginning of the week still saw a
strong and high kill, but from
Wednesday onwards volumes dropped
significantly.The beef demand for the
holidays from the supermarkets is
covered and from what
we hear, slaughterings are expected to
be significantly lower for the rest
ofthe year as well. It is not yet
possible to make a forecast for the
beginning
of the year.
What
do we expect:
Something
sensational would have to happen
that could really move the market in
the next few weeks. There is neither
noticeable unsatisfied demand, nor
considerable unsold stocks, nor do we
sense
any great speculative ambitions from
any side at the moment. This gives the
impression that hardly any significant
impulses should be expected in the
hide
market at least until mid-January.
Those who are shutting down this week
we wish already a Very Happy Xmas and
for the others a relaxed week.
